Morgan Wallen, Taylor Swift, and Others Break Billboard Music Awards Records in 2023

It’s the first time a single artist has won both major awards in the same year since Usher in 2004 with Confession and his megahit “Yeah” (featuring Lil Jon & Ludacris).Morgan Wallen won 11 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (November 19),the most by any artist in a single year since Drake received 12 in 2019.

Taylor Swift won 10 BBMAs this year, bringing her career total to 39, tying her with Drake for the most of all time. (Drake received five awards this year to reach the same total.

Wallen had previously received four BBMA nominations. His new career total of 15 awards places him second only to Garth Brooks in the country music industry. Brooks has received 20 BBMA nominations.

Swift was named top artist for the third time, tying her with Drake for the most wins in that category. Swift was also named the top Billboard 200 artist for the sixth time, and the top female artist for the fifth time.

Wallen dominated the country categories, taking home awards for the top country artist, top country album, top country song, and top country tour.

Drake was equally dominant in the rap field, winning top Rap artist for the fifth time, top run tour for the second time, top rap album (Her Loss), and top rap tour for the first time.

In R&B and Rock, SZA and Zach Bryan were nearly as dominant. SZA was named best R&B female artist, best R&B album (SOS), and best R&B song (‘Kill Bill”). However, Beyonce received the award for best R&B touring artist.

Bryan and SZA took home four BBMAs this year. Bryan won the important category of best new artist. He was a first-time winner of the BBMAs. SZA had previously won two BBMAs.

Bad Bunny, Beyonce, 21 Savage and Miley Cyrus Won 3 Billboard Music Awards Records

This brings Beyonce’s total to 16, trying her for the most Billboard Music Awards won by a woman of color with Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

This year, Carey received a special Chart Achievement Award for the historic success of her single “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which
topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart from 2019 to 2022, and could reclaim the top spot this year as well.

Beyonce and Bad Bunny nearly swept the top awards in their fields. Beyonce won top dance/electronic artist and album (Renaissance), but the award for top dance/electronic song went to David Guetta and Bebe Rexha for “I’m Good (Blue).”

Elsabon Arnado x Peso Pluma won the top Latin song for “Ella Baila Sola” but Bunny won top Latin artist for the fourth year in a row and top Latin album (Un Verano Sin Ti) for the third time in four years.

The Weeknd, KAROL G, and Fuerza Rigida All Took Home Two Prizes Apiece

In the all-genre top duo/group category, Fuerza Regida triumphed over Metallica, Eslabon Armado, Fifty Fifty, and Grupo Frontera. Remarkably, three of these five bands have Latin music roots.

With two more wins, The Weekend’s career total now stands at 22, placing him fourth on the all-time BBMAs is in fifth place all-time, behind Adele and Usher.

Ye, (formerly known as Kanye West) Wins Top Gospel Artist for the fourth year in a Row

Ye, as West is now called, took home the top gospel artist prize this year. He has now won that category four times in a row, solidifying his position as the leader of the group. In this category, Kirk Franklin category and Tasha Cobbs Leonard have each won twice.

Lauren Daigle won for the Fourth time in a row as the top Christian artist. Despite being a finalist in ten categories, Luke Combs was not awarded any BBMAs. He faced off against Wallen, the unstoppable, in eight of those divisions. Ariana Grande didn’t win any awards despite being a finalist in five different categories. In three of those categories, she fell short against the scorching Cyrus.

The only rock band nominated for the overall top duo/group award is Metallica. Thus, it stands to reason that they would win best rock/duo
group. The Arctic Monkeys defeated them.

How is that Possible?

These two awards assess success in different ways. The overall top duo/group award is based on Hot 100 and Billboard 200 performance. The Billboard Hot Rock Songs and Top Rock Album charts are used to determine the best rock duo/group.

“As It Was” by Harry Styles was a finalist for the top BB global (excluding the United States) song. The song was released on April 1st, 2022, seven months before the start of this year’s eligibility tracking period (November 4, 2022 – October 12th, 2023).
